In simple terms, the khatak (ཁ་བཏགས་) symbolizes purity and compassion. The khatak is used in diverse manners from being offered to lamas and holy sites, presented with incense at many ceremonial occasions, including births, weddings, funerals, graduations and the arrival or departure of guests. Khataks are usually white, symbolizing the pure heart of the giver.

 

Today the understanding of khatak has globalized and has evolved in meaning beyond traditions. As time passed, through 'khatak folding' a way of life remains subconsciously passed down through generations, grandmother to father, father to daughter, teacher to student.
